Traditional medicine waits for symptoms. For pancreatic cancer, that is a failing strategy. Its reputation as a "silent killer" is well-earned, as it rarely causes symptoms until it has grown and spread. As a result, an estimated 80-85% of patients are diagnosed at locally advanced or metastatic stages, when curative surgery is no longer an option [1]. This grim reality is why pancreatic cancer is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States by 2030 [2].

Maggie's discovery stands in stark contrast to this trend. She was completely asymptomatic, fitting the profile of a patient who would have been missed by the traditional healthcare system. Standard guidelines do not recommend screening for pancreatic cancer in the general, asymptomatic population, as the disease's low prevalence can lead to high false-positive rates [3].
