When you hear the term 'plant-forward', you may automatically think 'vegan'. Though surprisingly, this approach to eating doesn't actually mean elimination of animal foods. Instead, it emphasizes sourcing nutrients such as fiber, polyphenols, minerals, and vitamins from a variety of minimally processed, plant foods while including animal sources more strategically.

Leaning toward a plant-forward diet means ingesting a broad array of powerful fibrous foods and micronutrients, which have been linked to improved gut health, better cardiometabolic outcomes, and decreased inflammation. [7]

As you age, the rate of skeletal muscle mass loss increases though paradoxically, muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging, functional fitness and independence later in life. 

Therefore, it becomes increasingly important  to prioritize adequate protein at each meal to preserve the muscle you've worked hard for, and if anything, build more lean mass tissue over time. [8]

Many of the chronic diseases associated with aging share a common foundation: metabolic dysfunction. Cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and even certain neurodegenerative conditions are strongly linked to metabolic health.

One reason may be that these foods make it easier to consume excess calories in place of more nutrient-dense options. Rather than focusing on strict avoidance, we encourage members to think about the frequency and volume of their intake. Deprioritize ultra-processed foods and instead emphasize whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and lean proteins – these are not only more satiating, but are inherently less calorically dense, making it easier to fill up on foods that provide more impactful 'information' to your cells and systems.

How protein intake affects aging and muscle health

Protein deserves special attention in any discussion of nutrition for longevity. Beginning in midlife, adults naturally lose muscle mass over time. Without intervention, this process can accelerate as you get older. Adequate protein intake helps support:

  • Muscle maintenance and blood sugar control

  • Physical and exercise performance

  • Healthy body composition

  • Feeling full at meal time

Protein is particularly effective when combined with resistance training. As we often tell members, nutrition and exercise are not separate conversations – they work together. No single food dictates lifespan or healthspan. While isolated headlines often overemphasize 'miracle' ingredients or villainize specific foods, evaluating nutrition in a vacuum detracts from the larger picture. True metabolic resilience and longevity are driven by the compounding effects of broad dietary patterns, a reality consistently validated by clinical research.
